Chapter Nine

“Sir!” a voice shouted somewhere very close to my ear. “Sir! You have to wake up. Ethan!”

A loud smack echoed through the room, and my eyes flew open as a sharp burn spread across my cheek. I stared up at Frederick who looked down at me with a startled expression on his face that probably mirrored mine.

“What the fuck?” I asked, sitting up and rubbing the hot skin.

“I’m sorry, sir,” he said, massaging his hand. “But you weren’t waking up, and we have to leave. Right now, sir.”

“Leave?” I asked incredulously. “What the hell time is it?”

“It’s almost five in the morning. We have to go, Ethan. I have your father’s limo out front. You can sleep for the day in there, but we have to get to Chicago.”

This news shook all traces of sleep from my mind. I jumped to my feet and wrenched my shoes on. “What’s going on?”

“King McHale called a little while ago. He said he’d been trying your cell phone, but it was going straight to voicemail.” Frederick was already walking out the door as he spoke.

I glanced at my phone and saw that it was dead. Cursing, I threw it in my pocket as I strode quickly from the room behind him.

“What’s going on?” I asked again as I thundered down the stairs.

“I’m not entirely sure,” he said. He walked out the front door. “The king said he needs you home immediately to help him deal with a situation that’s arisen. I didn’t ask for details.”

He held open the door to the back of the limo for me, and I slid in, staring up at him incredulously before he slammed it in my face. I opened the partition between me and the front of the car as he got behind the wheel and fired up the engine.

“You didn’t ask?” I bellowed at him. “Jamie says he needs me home, and you didn’t bother to question why?”

“No, sir,” he said with a shrug. “One does not question the monarchy. But…well, he sounded worried.”

“Give me your phone,” I barked. He held it over his shoulder, and I snatched it from his hand, dialing Jamie’s number with shaking fingers.

“Hello,” a muted voice whispered into the receiver.

“Jamie?”

“Ethan! Thank God. Are you on your way?” Worried had been an understatement on Frederick’s part. Jamie sounded terrified.

“Yes, we’re on our way. But it’s going to be daytime before we get there. Sweetie, what’s the matter?” He was seriously scaring the hell out of me.

“Well, obviously no one was expecting me back tonight. When I got to the house, Stephanie was there, and they were pulling someone out of her trunk. They didn’t see me, thank goodness, but I could clearly see the body was tied up, and there was a hood over the person’s head. I don’t know what the hell’s going on in there, but they appear to have kidnapped someone and are doing God knows what to them in my house.”

“Where are you now?” I asked, my heart thundering in my ears.
